I really like these promotional give-away from ted baker really effective. Looks really simple just a sourced wallpaper pattern with some corporate type. Im really interested how patterns are implemented in design.
Really useful book has loads of sources from books. Alot of them are quite dated now but they are still valid and in some ways I can see alot of modern design work taken from some f these ideas and examples. All theses examples are very simple in form and use very basic shapes, but I feel like you can do alot with simple shapes and usually keeping it simple works the most effectively.
New brief = New problems! So part of the brief is collecting and collections. I don't actually collect anything in particular, I usually just rip things out of magazines that I like, like many people I suppose. I think its very easy to mis understand 'What a book is'. So basically I discovered how a book was in the aesthetic sense for example how they are made. I found this out by going to book binding workshops which were very helpful made me see how much work goes on just to make a simple book. So with the obvious sense of what a book was out the way I moved on to thinking what the context and content and even the use it could have.
Something that came up alot in my research was patterns. I was very interested in patterns and thought it would be quite appropriate for this brief as patterns can sometimes be collections of something and repeated. Much of my research shows the different types of patterns and collections. I bought a book that was very helpful with this which was called 'over and over'. Some of these examples are taken from this book.
Amazingly initiative, one of those designs that you think 'I wish I had done it'. They also work really well in series. Its only till you get right up close to the design that you see how much time and effect was put into it, with all the little stars and then stars within stars.
Its only since the introduction of the computers that design can elaborate with such designs make up posters in this way. The speed in which design is made is beginning to worry me.
